Our History

The chaplaincy had a humble begining which started with the a small collection of students of then Nkumba College of Commerce who thought it right to have spiritual guidance. These created the a small catholic prayer community whose numbers grew over time. They needed a priest to have mass with them especially on Sundays. The increasing numbers birthed the Nkumba University Catholic Community NUCC after the Nkumba College of Commerce transited to become Nkumba University in 1994. .

Still in need of a permanent priest, Two Canadian priest Fr. James and Fr. Peter who were on a peace mission and residing in Kisubi Parish started celebrating mass with NUCC. These did alot with the community including funding some students who needed tuition help. late Fr. John Mary Lwanga took up after them. He was assisted by Fr. Mukasa Francis and Msgr. Charles Kasibante and Fr. Safari Eugene other members of staff on Kisubi Minor Seminary .

Cardinal Wamala, Fr. Mpagi and Fr. Damian

His Eminance Cardinal Emmnuel Wamala the Archbishop of Kampala them played a big role in acquistion of land that is now the home of the chaplancy. This was as a result of understanding and exchange of land between the catholic community of Nkumba and the congrigation of St. Franciscan sisters of Nsambya hospital. He further appointed Fr. Mpagi to be the care taker of the catholic community at the University.

The situation started to normalize in 2000 when the University started to have clargy admited for different courses at Nkumba University. Fr. Augustine Mpagi was admited in the School of Education. Appointment by His Eminance Cardinal Emmanual Wamala, Fr. Augustine Mpagi took up the services of the community and introduced the daily everning mass, Sunday 1:00pm Mass for weekend program students. He selflessly did all that a chaplain would do.

He further officiated sacraments to both students and staff. Fr. Augustine Mpagi was succeded by Fr. Dr. Katamba in 2007 whose contribution will also be remembered. Under his leadership, The Nkumba University Catholic Community under the patronage of St. Charles Lwange was changed to the patronage of the Holy Family and then changed its name to THE HOLY FAMILY CATHOLIC CHAPLAINCY. Fr. Dr. Katamba was succeded by Fr. Ivan Kalamuzi and now the chaplaincy is under the leadership of Fr. Herman Mukasa Zziwa who is assisted by Prof. Fr. Norman Nsereko
